Trailers that are probably better then the movies

For every shitty movie, there's the chance for a good trailer. After a little YouTube digging and wasted time I've dusted up five - count, five - trailers that keep it simple and stupid. Click along for pleasant suprises (and maybe even a few blacked-out memories):

5. Soylent Green
Soylent Green contains the worst kept surprise ending of all time. We are asked “What is Soylent Green?” and then given several hints (bodies on treadmills in a factory making little green patties followed by a struggle in presumably the same factory, those fantastic people scoopers) and Charlton just barely keeps from blurting it out at the very end. We’re introduced to most of the characters and what their purpose in the film is. Two of them even have their fates revealed. Everything is hand fed to you in this trailer and I’ve never heard others discuss the brilliance of Soylent Green besides the “It’s people!” line, so this trailer belongs on this list.

4. Watchmen
Everyone who read the novel was expecting to experience some level of disappointment in the film version (and our expectations were fully, forcefully at times, met.) But there was nothing lost in being treated to cinematic flashes of our favorite scenes with Billy C. singing along (the song was originally made for the soundtrack to Batman & Robin, so one can assume this is his angst at an all-time high.) For example, just from the bit with Nite Owl freaking out in the snow you could assess that he’s reacting to the nuking of Rorschach. There’s a lot of fun to be taken from that, unlike the actual scene, where Nite Owl’s presence actually spoils everything. Furthermore,

3. Doctor Dolittle (1967)
"You've never seen anything like it in your life" This trailer easily establishes the character Doctor Dolittle and what the entire film is about (Dr. Dolittle has found love) in the span of a just one song. And it might not be the song that anyone remembers or cares about but that's okay. Pay close enough attention, you’ll catch the two-headed llama – a little nugget of surprise that awards the attentive. And then Rex Harrison is given a slice of time to announce that Doctor Dolittle is “the first film in which a human being talks to animals”, then teases us with his ability. There are few directors brave enough to present the actor to the audience out of character. This trailer is pushing boundaries.

2. Doctor Dolittle (1998)
Oh how far we’ve come. This trailer has a TON of funny parts. It is also a pretty good representation of American culture circa late 1990’s. It’s also the archetypal mainstream PG/PG-13 comedy movie trailer: that distinctive comedy film narrator, the celebrity voice stars, early staged CGI, Eddie Murphy, established sound effects, record scratching! 40 years from now, this trailer will be required viewing for film studies courses.
Quick list of genuinely funny parts:
1. Preacher throttling little boy- That nerdy little kid looks horrified!
2. Eddie Murphy screams after discovering a hamster on his stomach- Just wacky as hell. Don’t even pretend you didn’t at least ironically smile.
3. Dog getting dragged to vet - I find this funny because if my dog could talk and more fully cognitive, he’d probably act the exact same way towards the prospect of having his manhood surgically removed.
4. Eddie Murphy, actor- I’m pretty sure this film is considered by most critics as the beginning of the end for Eddie Murphy. I did like Bowfinger, which IMDB says was made two years after this film, but after that, it’s kind of a sad little wasteland compared to his other films. Knowing this, the trailer is funnier.

1. Parents
This movie most likely sucks but wow, what a trailer! This trailed (proudly presented by VESTRON PICTURES) is a perfect collage of hauntingly vague imagery and meat close-ups and likely all of the film’s important dialogue. I don’t want to know what Randy Quaid is smiling about and any film that removes that mystery (likely this one) is complete garbage.

Hang with us...

Hey there CPR faithful (aka Luke and Justin)...we haven't been updating lately because we're hard at work putting together CRUST NEVER SLEEPS volume 1. Guess what? We have a SWEET stamp that says "Vol. 1"! I've been stamping Spencer's face and now he can't go out in public--bummer, but it gives him more time to work on putting this shit together.

As of right now, the tracklisting is as follows:

1. King Crimson - "21st Century Schizoid Man" (Fripp, McDonald, Lake, Giles, Sinfield) – 7:21
(including "Mirrors")
2. King Crimson - "I Talk to the Wind" (McDonald, Sinfield) – 6:05
3. King Crimson - "Epitaph" (Fripp, McDonald, Lake, Giles, Sinfield) – 8:47
(including "March for No Reason" and
"Tomorrow and Tomorrow")
4. King Crimson - Moonchild" (Fripp, McDonald, Lake, Giles, Sinfield) – 12:13
(including "The Dream" and
"The Illusion")
5. King Crimson - "The Court of the Crimson King" (McDonald, Sinfield) – 9:25
(including "The Return of the Fire Witch" and
"The Dance of the Puppets")
6. Randy Numens - I Fucked A Girl (Katy Perry remake)

I think it flows nicely but Spencer says we should use the songs that people actually sent us...so this is really liable to change.

Come back to this spot May 1st for the actual (less proggy) playlist.

In the mean time, here's a sick Larry Bird video:

There is a kc quilty show of sorts tomorrow night. It is in the basement of st paul’s chapel at columbia. it will be an unplugged set, and we are just as weirded out by that as you all are. The last time kc quilty played an acoustic set was in summer 2007 at an Italian bistro and we were paid in spaghetti dinner. the time before that was at Pyramid Club and a member got sent to rehab the next day. Who knows what will result from the third in the trilogy?

I am glad it took me so long to become aware of Asher Roth.

Why am I glad it took me so long to become aware of Asher Roth? Because he kind of sucks.

"I am champi-ahn of beer pahng"? Really Asher Roth? As far as I can tell from this song, Asher Roth loves drinking, women, and college, and went to a woefully flawed sex ed class. This is like Van Wilder: The Musical but worse. Maybe if he partied a little bit less and went to class he might be able to write some halfway decent rhymes.

I Love College - Asher Roth

Cheers to Rivers Cuomo, at any rate, for denying him the "Say It Ain't So" sample.

Lou Barlow Sets Chan Marshall On Fire

Spencer's list of his top six favorite quiet songs was pretty cute, wasn't it? Super-cute.  About as cute as Princess Peach before Bowser sets her on fire with his flame breath.  Peach : Bowser :: Cat Power : Sebadoh.  Observe & study, young pupils:

Disclaimer: I may have played Super Smash Bros. as Bowser against 3 CPU Peaches last night, and lost against the pink one. Fuck.

Disclaimer deux: Lou Barlow is actually kind of a whiny bitch. Just ignore the lyrics, will ya?

6 songs to save a planet inhabited by the likes of Jason Mraz and all those other pricks

I've considered Justin's Top 5 albums post an open invitation to draw up a list of my own. What follows are six of the best quiet songs you may ever hear.

1. Neil Young - "Powderfinger"

Powderfinger - Neil Young

This version is from the unreleased Chrome Dreams album, recorded circa 1977. The production values are basically nil, but it's never been wise to go to Mr. Young for your hi-fi fix. What I love most about this song is the lyrics. Very evocative. It's probably the saddest song I've ever heard in my life, thus making it my all-time favorite song.

2. Nick Drake - "From the Morning"

Nick Drake represents one of life's most incomprehensible anomalies. Here was a tall, handsome guy who wrote some of the world's most beautiful songs and he simply could not get laid. "From the Morning" is the last song on his final album, Pink Moon.

3. Elbow - "Asleep in the Back"

Video at Yahoo! Music

The first Elbow song I heard. Nice organ part, nice lyrics. Great video, too. Who directed this?

4. Townes Van Zandt - "Waitin' Around to Die"

If you watch one clip in this post let it be this one. I don't really know much about Townes Van Zandt at all, but this song is outstanding and the performance is stunning. The old dude sitting in back even starts to cry. Unbelievable.

5. Cat Power - "All I Have To Do Is Dream" / "Blue Moon"

Dreams - Blue Moon - Cat Power

In which Chan Marshall sings the shit out of two absolute classics that happen to share the same four chords.

6. British Sea Power - "When I Go Out"

This is an obscure B-side by a band who were indie rock darlings back in 2003 or 2004. Their latest album, Do You Like Rock Music? is way better than most critics made out. When I go outside these days almost everything seems strange.

Okay, well done me. Pat on the back.

Randy Numens vs. Lucas & The Cops

is this randy numens?

So we should probably address what occured the other night at the Randy Numens show that nearly occured at Potluck House.

Let me first preface this by stating that the people that run Potluck House are amazing and wonderful people for attempting to put on a show in a space that was far too small. Additionally, they opened up their home at the last second to take on a show that was originally intended to occur in a MUCH larger space. Kudos to them for even trying.

The Numens' boat arrived at Pier 86 at around 9 PM and Spencer and I quickly ferried them to the show in the CPR armored vehicle, along with all of their amps, drums, drum hardware, etcetera. Upon arriving at Potluck House, we were dismayed to find that Lucas, the drummer for openers Hello Boss had also brought all of his drum gear to and insisted on dragging it up into the size-too-small Potluck House performance space. We agreed to let him keep his shit upstairs if he would just keep it out of the way...so as the tiny room filled with smelly musicians carting boxes of gear around, the little guy dragged half of his crap into the tiny room. Lucas then insisted on putting his hot pink drum rug under the Numens' kit, so everything was moved around and replaced on his rug. Luckily, the Numens weren't privy to this because they were busy placing a collect call to the ISS Space Station and then were further occupied with freebasing cocaine off of a rusty spork.

the little fucker himself

At this point, the show organizers and I were both stressed but not out of control. A lot of times, when you've got a bunch of bands playing, at least one person is a a bit overly neurotic (see: controlling douchebag) but usually, things tend to go off alright. Despite various protestations, he insisted on using not two or even three but four cymbals in a room that barely had room for even a bass drum.

Hello Boss played an enjoyable set considering the room and sound limitations but directly afterwards, Lucas decided that he was taking off. This is a classic asshole musician move and of course, he told me he planned to take his rug and his drum throne (which admittedly nobody asked to borrow) and his rack tom (which he had assured us could be used by other bands). Lucas additionally took two of the Randy Numens' cymbal stands in his hurry to get out of the venue. The Numens were prepared to let this go but I made sure to give Lucas a piece of my mind before he left (and you can too! IM him @ chosungalbi). He later accused me of calling him names and physically attacking him, which is ridiculous because I'm a 3 foot midget with one leg.

So let's just say if you're ever playing a show with a band called Hello Boss, watch your gear carefully because Lucas Berman wants your equipment even though he's apparently loaded according to his bandmates--who for the record are some of the nicest people imaginable. I mean them no harm with this post, it's just that they really need a new drummer. Guys, if you're reading, I will gladly take Lucas' place.

Oh and by the way, the Randy Numens never even got to play. The cops showed up and shut the show down just as they were going on. Pretty shitty night.
