Trailers that are probably better then the movies

For every shitty movie, there's the chance for a good trailer. After a little YouTube digging and wasted time I've dusted up five - count, five - trailers that keep it simple and stupid. Click along for pleasant suprises (and maybe even a few blacked-out memories):

5. Soylent Green
Soylent Green contains the worst kept surprise ending of all time. We are asked “What is Soylent Green?” and then given several hints (bodies on treadmills in a factory making little green patties followed by a struggle in presumably the same factory, those fantastic people scoopers) and Charlton just barely keeps from blurting it out at the very end. We’re introduced to most of the characters and what their purpose in the film is. Two of them even have their fates revealed. Everything is hand fed to you in this trailer and I’ve never heard others discuss the brilliance of Soylent Green besides the “It’s people!” line, so this trailer belongs on this list.

4. Watchmen
Everyone who read the novel was expecting to experience some level of disappointment in the film version (and our expectations were fully, forcefully at times, met.) But there was nothing lost in being treated to cinematic flashes of our favorite scenes with Billy C. singing along (the song was originally made for the soundtrack to Batman & Robin, so one can assume this is his angst at an all-time high.) For example, just from the bit with Nite Owl freaking out in the snow you could assess that he’s reacting to the nuking of Rorschach. There’s a lot of fun to be taken from that, unlike the actual scene, where Nite Owl’s presence actually spoils everything. Furthermore,

3. Doctor Dolittle (1967)
"You've never seen anything like it in your life" This trailer easily establishes the character Doctor Dolittle and what the entire film is about (Dr. Dolittle has found love) in the span of a just one song. And it might not be the song that anyone remembers or cares about but that's okay. Pay close enough attention, you’ll catch the two-headed llama – a little nugget of surprise that awards the attentive. And then Rex Harrison is given a slice of time to announce that Doctor Dolittle is “the first film in which a human being talks to animals”, then teases us with his ability. There are few directors brave enough to present the actor to the audience out of character. This trailer is pushing boundaries.

2. Doctor Dolittle (1998)
Oh how far we’ve come. This trailer has a TON of funny parts. It is also a pretty good representation of American culture circa late 1990’s. It’s also the archetypal mainstream PG/PG-13 comedy movie trailer: that distinctive comedy film narrator, the celebrity voice stars, early staged CGI, Eddie Murphy, established sound effects, record scratching! 40 years from now, this trailer will be required viewing for film studies courses.
Quick list of genuinely funny parts:
1. Preacher throttling little boy- That nerdy little kid looks horrified!
2. Eddie Murphy screams after discovering a hamster on his stomach- Just wacky as hell. Don’t even pretend you didn’t at least ironically smile.
3. Dog getting dragged to vet - I find this funny because if my dog could talk and more fully cognitive, he’d probably act the exact same way towards the prospect of having his manhood surgically removed.
4. Eddie Murphy, actor- I’m pretty sure this film is considered by most critics as the beginning of the end for Eddie Murphy. I did like Bowfinger, which IMDB says was made two years after this film, but after that, it’s kind of a sad little wasteland compared to his other films. Knowing this, the trailer is funnier.

1. Parents
This movie most likely sucks but wow, what a trailer! This trailed (proudly presented by VESTRON PICTURES) is a perfect collage of hauntingly vague imagery and meat close-ups and likely all of the film’s important dialogue. I don’t want to know what Randy Quaid is smiling about and any film that removes that mystery (likely this one) is complete garbage.

Hang with us...

Hey there CPR faithful (aka Luke and Justin)...we haven't been updating lately because we're hard at work putting together CRUST NEVER SLEEPS volume 1. Guess what? We have a SWEET stamp that says "Vol. 1"! I've been stamping Spencer's face and now he can't go out in public--bummer, but it gives him more time to work on putting this shit together.

As of right now, the tracklisting is as follows:

1. King Crimson - "21st Century Schizoid Man" (Fripp, McDonald, Lake, Giles, Sinfield) – 7:21
(including "Mirrors")
2. King Crimson - "I Talk to the Wind" (McDonald, Sinfield) – 6:05
3. King Crimson - "Epitaph" (Fripp, McDonald, Lake, Giles, Sinfield) – 8:47
(including "March for No Reason" and
"Tomorrow and Tomorrow")
4. King Crimson - Moonchild" (Fripp, McDonald, Lake, Giles, Sinfield) – 12:13
(including "The Dream" and
"The Illusion")
5. King Crimson - "The Court of the Crimson King" (McDonald, Sinfield) – 9:25
(including "The Return of the Fire Witch" and
"The Dance of the Puppets")
6. Randy Numens - I Fucked A Girl (Katy Perry remake)

I think it flows nicely but Spencer says we should use the songs that people actually sent us...so this is really liable to change.

Come back to this spot May 1st for the actual (less proggy) playlist.

In the mean time, here's a sick Larry Bird video:

I am glad it took me so long to become aware of Asher Roth.

Why am I glad it took me so long to become aware of Asher Roth? Because he kind of sucks.

"I am champi-ahn of beer pahng"? Really Asher Roth? As far as I can tell from this song, Asher Roth loves drinking, women, and college, and went to a woefully flawed sex ed class. This is like Van Wilder: The Musical but worse. Maybe if he partied a little bit less and went to class he might be able to write some halfway decent rhymes.

I Love College - Asher Roth

Cheers to Rivers Cuomo, at any rate, for denying him the "Say It Ain't So" sample.

Last night I dreamt somebody loved me...

Kanye's response to a recent South Park lampooning (I'll ask the kids about this later):

"SOUTH PARK MURDERED ME LAST NIGHT AND IT'S PRETTY FUNNY. IT HURTS MY FEELINGS BUT WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM SOUTH PARK! I ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY EGO THOUGH. HAVING THE CRAZY EGO IS PLAYED OUT AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE AND CAREER. I USE TO USE IT TO BUILD UP MY ESTEEM WHEN NOBODY BELIEVED IN ME. NOW THAT PEOPLE DO BELIEVE AND SUPPORT MY MUSIC AND PRODUCTS THE BEST RESPONSE IS THANK YOU INSTEAD OF "I TOLD YOU SO!!!" IT'S COOL TO TALK SHIT WHEN YOU'RE RAPPING BUT NOT IN REAL LIFE. WHEN YOU MEET LITTLE WAYNE IN PERSON HE'S THE NICEST GUY FOR EXAMPLE. I JUST WANNA BE A DOPER PERSON WHICH STARTS WITH ME NOT ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE HOW DOPE I THINK I AM. I NEED TO JUST GET PAST MYSELF. DROP THE BRAVADO AND JUST MAKE DOPE PRODUCT. EVERYTHING IS NOT THAT SERIOUS. AS LONG AS PEOPLE THINK I ACT LIKE A BITCH THIS TYPE OF SHIT WILL HAPPEN TO ME. I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I'M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I'M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. I'M SURE THE WRITERS AT SOUTH PARK ARE REALLY NICE PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE. THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DRAW MY CREW. THAT WAS PRETTY FUNNY ALSO!! I'M SURE THERE'S GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THIS... THAT'S HOW YOU KNOW IT'S ME!"

What do you do when someone just responds this nakedly to being teased? I don't even know if this constitutes humor. Good for you, buddy. Oh, and anyone in doubt that Little Wayne is a nice person, check out the vids below (high five Justin):

Can No Doubt pull this off?

A lot of the vaguely insecure white kids I know from the tri-state area seem to have gone through a "ska phase" in middle school. Either I'm ahead of the curve or extra-insecure, because my ska phase hit around third grade and lasted up through middle school. The Specials were the cream of the crop, no buts about it, but as an awkward fat girl with aspirations towards singing, Gwen Stefani became my celebrity role model because a) she wasn't awkard; b) she wasn't fat; c) she could fucking sing. Evidence:

Eventually I moved on to other musical interests (see: aggressive unwashed men from the Northwest) but looking back, No Doubt's first three records totally rocked it (yes, I'm including Return of Saturn... the guitars sound great and Gwen's awesome pink hair inspired me to dye mine in seventh grade).

Why did Rock Steady suck so much? Gwen got engaged. Gwen got ready to pop some babies out. Gwen got happy. It's the same reason Cat Power sucks now. Same reason Isaac Brock sucks now. I know for a lot of people No Doubt wasn't about the angst, but pick any break up song off Tragic Kingdom and TRY to tell me "Hella Good" can even stand next to it.

Anyway, Mrs. Rossdale is taking a break from the Harajuku girls and touring with No Doubt again. Now that they're ALL parents (save bachel0r-for-life bassist Tony Kanal...sigh) I was prepared to write off any new recordings as more cheeze. BUT they just put out a cover of Adam and the Ant's "Stand on Deliver" and I'm shocked to find that it's pretty good. Everyone on the commenst sections of stereogum and youtube is trashing it, but come on, guys... it's pretty tasty:

Is this passable? Or have they just set the bar so low that I'll be happy with anything that doesn't sound like Parramore?

Kanye Live: Futuro-epic horror show / Janelle Monae: Cyberbabe 2000

I've talked to a couple of people about this video now. It's from VH1's Storytellers and I guess it's a pretty good approximation of how Kanye's been performing the 808s and Heartbreak stuff on the road. Watch for long enough and you'll catch plenty of fro-hawk, back-up singer in shiny robotech dress, and a shit-ton of stunner shades. The thing I really like about Kanye, I guess, is that he just completely does whatever he feels like.

Oh, and here's this video from Janelle Monae, who I like a lot because her music is weird and thematically obsessed with robotics. Open call to area musicians: I'm trying to write an R&B fantasy epic. Any takers?

OMG We're Back in the BK, NCAA Tournament, Coffee, Cigarettes

Got back from a road trip to Chapel Hill today. Beautiful town / school and so, largely for the hell of it, I'm going to go with our president's NCAA Men's Championship prediction on this my first year of paying any attention whatsoever to college basketball. Lawson, Ellington, Hansborough - these guys have serious game.

I didn't really do a bracket, but I'd quite like to see the Heels go up against Syracuse in the next round, since those guys are scrappier than hemmed-in Bushwick rottweilers on the scent of the hipster interloper. Devendorf even kinda looks like one. Or maybe I'm thinking of OU's Blake Griffin? Hmmmm

Also, did anyone else know Obama was left-handed? Is that right, or just a camera thing? More importantly, can you ever trust a lefty?

Kidding.

Getting on with music, though, I've been really into Tom Waits over the last week, so I thought I'd post a clip from off the YouTube. This a full scene from Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) that I find oddly soothing because it reminds me that no matter how environmentally frustrating New York can be, there will at least be diners with free refills. Iggy Pop and Tom Waits also make a big impression on me for being cool old dudes who aren't fat and complacent.

"Shut Down" - Beach Boys (1964)

Funny how the Beach Boys got away with cribbing Chuck Berry so blatantly on their early records. Even so, "Shut Down" is just a great song. Check out Mike "Doctor" Love's tenor sax "solo" near the end.

You Made Me Realise / KC Quilty in Coney Island

Check this out. It's a clip of My Bloody Valentine doing "You Made Me Realise" on some old TV show.

Last night KC Quilty recorded 3 songs at Ava Luna's basement rehearsal space, out in Coney Island. I think they sound pretty fresh. Check out the MySpace for the latest news and stuff. I think we're playing a Columbia/Barnard thing here in Brooklyn in, like, May.

More importantly, though, as I was rocking some guitar parts, you know, I got thinking about some of my favorite guitar bands from the '90s or whatever, because it seems like it's been a while since I really went back to rediscover some of those key albums, the ones I would always try to copy but never had the chops for.

My Bloody Valentine, Radiohead, Blur, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins – those guys made some records that still kill me they're so good. Isn't Anything, The Bends, Slanted & Enchanted, Siamese Dream. What else is there? Spiderland by Slint is amazing. Ride and Slowdive are also fantastic bands. The Brits pretty much owned the '90s when it came to reinventing the way you could play guitar. The Stone Roses' debut came out in '89, but I think that still counts, too. My friend Shomik keeps telling me The Second Coming is also really good.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that the '90s rule, etc. Also, keep a look out for new songs from KC Quilty and, uhh, maybe keep a little bucket handy. You know... so you can catch the mess when your face melts off.

Oh, and here's my favorite song by Slint:

Roots of Cyberpunk Volume 1: Powerman 5000 = THE SHIT

Captain Pollution, YES!!!!

randy numens might be the wave of the future, but as far as i'm concerned these dudes are, like, the founding fathers of cyberpunk rock.

when i was 13, Spider One seemed like the ultimate rock star figure. in retrospect, he was basically a cross between his brother, Rob Zombie, and Captain Pollution. also, he wore awesome goggles like Horace Grant. i have nothing but praise for these guys at their late 90s peak.

The Worst Music Video Ever: Gut Reactions

What in the hell is going on here? Why does the bald singer dude have a rat-tail? Why is there a man with a ponytail walking towards the camera? What is with this set? Who "directed" this? Why is the singer pretending to surf? Oh shit, it's nighttime. Why is there a snake? What the hell is with that tree? WHY ARE LIVE SUCH DOUCHEBUCKETS?!

I still like this song though. Fuck it.
