:::CPR015::: KC QUILTY - CLOVER/CORIANDER

Clover/Coriander, the debut release from Brooklynites kc quilty, is the culmination of three years of protracted gestation in which guitarist/vocalist Sadie Dupuis, an MIT dropout-turned-Columbia poet, and drummer Julian Fader (ex-Le Rug) recorded and re-recorded their creepy, catchy Pixies-styled anthems in a bevy of basements across the East Coast.

Their patience paid off. Clover/Coriander is a taut, fiery group of songs that recalls lo-fi stalwarts Sebadoh and Guided By Voices just as well as it embraces new wave shoegazers Autolux and Deerhunter. Recorded by Fader and Carlos Hernandez (Ava Luna) and featuring a shifting line-up of guest musicians, the album traverses effortlessly from the “gloriously pulverizing” guitars of “Supernova” to “Mr Benjamin Watson,” a track lauded as “the best song Blur never got to write for their self-titled album” by AWmusic.ca. Over all of this, Dupuis’ vocals fluctuate between sweetly fragile, lazily sarcastic and violently confrontational, resulting in an aesthetic akin to PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me.

Mixed by Jared O’Connell (A Brief Smile) and mastered by TW Walsh (Soft Drugs, ex-Pedro The Lion), Clover/Coriander is “power-packed…grunge-rock glory” (Praise for Wallflower) and “speaker-rattling…slacker anti-energy” (Ampeater Review).

Every decade, the battle between disco and rock rages anew. Autotune and ‘80s synth throwbacks defined the ‘00s. And just as grunge took cues from ‘70s hard rock, Cooling Pie Records bets the 2010s will have you rummaging through your Sub Pop Singles and watching Reality Bites on repeat. kc quilty’s already established their dedication to ‘90s revivalism. Throw on your thrift store flannel and come along with them.

Xmas Celebration!

Yo! Merry Xmas from CPR! We got a little present for everyone out there: Sadie of kc quilty recorded a cover of Weezer's "Christmas Celebration" in her basement and sent it to me and I'm putting it up here in honor of the holiday that I don't technically celebrate since I'm a Jew. Still, I'm finally learning to get into the spirit so here's her cover, literally five minutes after it was recorded:

Sadie Dupuis - Christmas Celebration (Weezer Cover) by coolingpierecords

Damn, if that don't get the blood flowing, then I don't know what will. Maybe some eggnog? Maybe a sexy santa?

I thought so...

::: CP017 ::: KC QUILTY / POCKETKNIFE - SIIYA/BUY BACK THE BOAT 7"

Hey kiddos...our new site is taking a bit longer to get up than I had hoped. Still, nobody can stop our furious flow of releases. So here with are with CPR's inaugural 7". kc quilty + pocketknife split this one...kc quilty's "Siiya" is going to be on their upcoming full length Clover/Coriander, out January 22nd. You might recognize Pocketknife's "Buy Back The Boat" from our own Crust Never Sleeps compilation. Now you can hear it again...on vinyl! I personally recommend you go buy the record and then play both songs at 33rpm. Everything's so slow...sooo sloooow..."Siiya" turns into smeary sludge metal and "Buy Back The Boat" sounds like smoking a shitload of opium and listening to Radiohead...or something. Anyways, that oughta pique your interest, right? You gotta get this thing.

kc quilty wants you!

kc quilty needs your help. The truth of the matter is that being in a band that's not currently getting full release massages from Pitchfork on the daily costs a lot of dough. It's also not glamorous like people seem to think. We basically sink a shitload of money into doing what we like and see very little monetary return. Of course, we wouldn't keep doing it if we didn't love it (why the fuck else would we run a label in an industry that's completely fucked?!).

As it is, we're in a bit of a tough position. We don't have the money to properly record and print up their debut album "Clover/Coriander". Some tracks are done, others are not, and we are at the point where we have to give up Ollie's scallion pancakes for Ramen noodles. If any of you have had Ollie's scallion pancakes, this is a big deal. Ramen noodles suck. We are looking to raise one thousand dollars ($1000) to get this puppy off the ground. If you donate now through kickstarter, you can OWN a piece of this project. Check this out:

You donate and based on the level of your donation, you are promised a certain package of rewards. If we don't reach $1000, nobody pays. If we do, well then you get to see the project through with us. Here are the rewards we're offering:

Sorry you missed us

Hey there CPR faithful. We haven't been updating because I (Julian) have been busy recording stuff with kc quilty and other people and none of my deadbeat friends want to write for this wonderful site. I did throw up a few photos of our recording sessions so far:

Looks good eh? Coming soon, we'll have a kc quilty full length, an Ava Luna full length, a Casiorossi EP and at LEAST one split CPR 7" in September. Keep lookin' forward, we'll be back very very soon....

Blame it on the juice

"late night sex/so wet and so tight..."

kc quilty's been doing a fair amount of recording with Carlos (of Ava Luna down at his Coney Island "recording studio". I say "recording studio" because it's actually the basement of a Korean church. It's somewhat roach infested with low ceilings and it's frequently freezing cold down there in almost any weather. All signs point it it sounding like crap and yet, it's a magical place. Carlos has been doing a lot of awesome sounding stuff down there with pretty much zero dollars worth of equipment. He's got a Mackie PA thing and some decent speakers, a bunch of cruddy vocal mics, and some old German thing called Das Kompressor or soemthing. Casiorossi, Ava Luna, and kc quilty have all been down there among others, check their respective myspace pages, or songs on the Crust Never Sleeps page) for examples.

This isn't just a self promotional post though, I have a point I'm getting around to here. Basically, Carlos is usually generous enough to drive us to and/or from Coney Island because it's a helluva long trip and we're usually recording in the middle of the night. The last few time's we've ridden with him, he's had Hot 97 on the radio, which I have no bones with. In mid-2009, Hot 97 is a tutorial in auto-tune, Melodyne, and synth strings. It's awesome. A lot of the songs sound similar though because they're all run through the same plugins on the same settings I think. And oh god, they play the SAME TWO SONGS over and over.

One of those songs is Jamie Foxx's Blame It (On The Alcohol). First of all, kudos to Jamie for putting out a song with parenthesis. I LOVE parenthesis songs. Second of all, kudos to Jamie for putting out the best/worst song ever. Just listen:

That's T-Pain on the chorus. And Jamie on the verse. Can you hear the difference? It's a pretty medicore song until it hits the chorus with it's stuttering a-a-a-a-a-a effect. I have no idea how/if he does this live. The craziest thing is, Jamie Foxx can actually sing. Why is he bathed in autotune? I'm repulsed and obsessed at the same time.

The other Hot 97-on-the-way-to-Coney-Island song that I keep hearing is "Whatever You Like" by T.I. It would have been cooler if he had called it "(You Can Have) Whatever You Like", but I'll forgive him because it's actually a pretty good song. The chorus vocals are really behind the beat--it's probably the only song I hear on Hot 97 that made me think of Billie Holiday. I mean, it's no "Strange Fruit", but I think it works for Avenue X at 3 AM.

Waltzin' On Kurdt

There is a kc quilty show of sorts tomorrow night. It is in the basement of st paul’s chapel at columbia. it will be an unplugged set, and we are just as weirded out by that as you all are. The last time kc quilty played an acoustic set was in summer 2007 at an Italian bistro and we were paid in spaghetti dinner. the time before that was at Pyramid Club and a member got sent to rehab the next day. Who knows what will result from the third in the trilogy?

OMG We're Back in the BK, NCAA Tournament, Coffee, Cigarettes

Got back from a road trip to Chapel Hill today. Beautiful town / school and so, largely for the hell of it, I'm going to go with our president's NCAA Men's Championship prediction on this my first year of paying any attention whatsoever to college basketball. Lawson, Ellington, Hansborough - these guys have serious game.

I didn't really do a bracket, but I'd quite like to see the Heels go up against Syracuse in the next round, since those guys are scrappier than hemmed-in Bushwick rottweilers on the scent of the hipster interloper. Devendorf even kinda looks like one. Or maybe I'm thinking of OU's Blake Griffin? Hmmmm

Also, did anyone else know Obama was left-handed? Is that right, or just a camera thing? More importantly, can you ever trust a lefty?

Kidding.

Getting on with music, though, I've been really into Tom Waits over the last week, so I thought I'd post a clip from off the YouTube. This a full scene from Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) that I find oddly soothing because it reminds me that no matter how environmentally frustrating New York can be, there will at least be diners with free refills. Iggy Pop and Tom Waits also make a big impression on me for being cool old dudes who aren't fat and complacent.

You Made Me Realise / KC Quilty in Coney Island

Check this out. It's a clip of My Bloody Valentine doing "You Made Me Realise" on some old TV show.

Last night KC Quilty recorded 3 songs at Ava Luna's basement rehearsal space, out in Coney Island. I think they sound pretty fresh. Check out the MySpace for the latest news and stuff. I think we're playing a Columbia/Barnard thing here in Brooklyn in, like, May.

More importantly, though, as I was rocking some guitar parts, you know, I got thinking about some of my favorite guitar bands from the '90s or whatever, because it seems like it's been a while since I really went back to rediscover some of those key albums, the ones I would always try to copy but never had the chops for.

My Bloody Valentine, Radiohead, Blur, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins – those guys made some records that still kill me they're so good. Isn't Anything, The Bends, Slanted & Enchanted, Siamese Dream. What else is there? Spiderland by Slint is amazing. Ride and Slowdive are also fantastic bands. The Brits pretty much owned the '90s when it came to reinventing the way you could play guitar. The Stone Roses' debut came out in '89, but I think that still counts, too. My friend Shomik keeps telling me The Second Coming is also really good.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that the '90s rule, etc. Also, keep a look out for new songs from KC Quilty and, uhh, maybe keep a little bucket handy. You know... so you can catch the mess when your face melts off.

Oh, and here's my favorite song by Slint:

Nosferatu Man - Slint

dayfrights ravingz

Jesus Christ, Pitchfork just redesigned their main page and it is fuuuuggglyyy. Fuck, how come there's a big ad that eats up the ENTIRE front of the page? It also looks like Opera which looks like balls*. It updates Pitchfork's design to this decade for sure; it reminds me of the new Wal-Mart logo and the new Stop n Shop logo. I dislike the way that everything is trying to look like its designed by Apple now. Everything's white with shades of gray which is a cleaner look but it lacks in character. I actually stopped reading Silent Uproar over a similar qualm so we'll see if Pitchfork survives the great update of 09.

Oh I got a video of kc quilty playing a new song called "Supernova" from the other night. The sound sucks but that's because it's being broadcast DIRECT FROM THE 90s! WOOO!

Watch live video from Goodbye Blue Monday on Justin.tv

Thanks justin.tv!

*Disclaimer: I love Opera a lot, despite its ugliness and many deficiencies. It's like a retarded little brother that I feel bad for and thus keep around.
